I am the Main Character Book Drive

In children’s literature, you are more likely to read a book featuring an animal or inanimate object as the main character than a person of color. At The Literacy Lab, we want our children to see in themselves – and their peers of all races – all the possibilities and empowering messages the main characters portray. When you become a donor to the I am the Main Character Book Drive, you will help us get more books featuring people of color in the hands of the students we serve, their schools, and their communities.

How to make a donation

1. Visit one of the online shops we have partnered with, or other book stores to purchase books and send them directly to our regional offices. When you shop at our partner book stores, you will receive free shipping when you use the codes below at checkout. Scroll down for the mailing addresses to our regional offices.

2. Donate “pre-loved” books in good condition for children in pre-K-3rd grade written by people of color and/or featuring characters of color. All donations should be sent to one of our regional offices.
3. Become a donor to The Literacy Lab to not only support this book drive but the organization’s work to support early literacy.
