- Only 36% of U.S. fourth graders are reading at a proficient level.
- Students who are not proficient readers by the third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
- By 12th grade, nearly two-thirds of high school students remain below proficient in reading, severely limiting their preparedness for college.
- Adults facing low literacy have significantly fewer employment opportunities, earning on average $31,000 less per year than those with proficient reading skills.
These stark realities underscore the urgency to address literacy early and comprehensively.
Our intensive and targeted approach is delivering measurable results:
- Over 40,000 children served since 2009, with more than 1,730 students served in just one recent year.
- Between the fall and winter assessment periods, the percentage of pre-K students on or near target for kindergarten readiness increased by 60%.
- 100% of partner principals reported that The Literacy Lab positively impacts students’ literacy skills and overall classroom instruction.
- Our Fellowship Model has engaged hundreds of emerging leaders, with many Fellows pursuing teaching or education leadership roles, enhancing local community investment.

The Literacy Lab is expanding our impact and innovating to serve more children with increased excellence. By 2030, we aim to:
Implement new literacy development tools in classrooms nationwide, significantly expanding our reach.
Develop new community-driven programs, including intergenerational literacy initiatives, peer tutoring, and community-based learning experiences.
Transition into a nonprofit social enterprise, using sound business practices and generating revenue to sustainably reinvest in our mission.
