We believe literacy is not just a skill, but a fundamental human right. When we fulfill our mission, we will build a world where everyone has the literacy to shape their future and make their hopes and aspirations a reality.

The Literacy Lab strives to ensure that all people have access to evidence-based literacy development to unlock opportunities for success in school and life.

We achieve our mission by:

Prioritizing the development of staff and Fellows.

Engaging in strategic partnerships to meet the needs of students, schools, and communities.

Using data analyses to drive innovation and continuous improvement.

We Believe Literacy Is A Human Right.

At The Literacy Lab, we believe that literacy is a human right and the pathway to liberation for all people. This belief underscores everything we do, internally and externally. Across the country there is much work to do and we are boldly answering the call.

The United States has been engulfed in a profound literacy crisis for multiple generations. This has undermined the future for our children, communities, and the overall economy. Only 36% of all U.S. fourth graders are reading at a proficient level. And nationally, 23% of third graders reading below basic levels fail to graduate on time, compared to just 4% of proficient readers. This follows children into adulthood as approximately 130 Million adults are unable to read a simple story to their children. The national literacy crisis is systemic and generational.

Now, imagine a classroom where every child believes they can succeed, where community leaders, of different ages and backgrounds, serve as mentors and role models, and where the ability to read unlocks doors to a future full of opportunity. At The Literacy Lab, we strive to make that vision a reality. We believe literacy is more than a skill — it’s a foundation for opportunity and lifelong success.

Yet, across the country, too many children — especially those in low-income communities — are locked out of opportunities. That’s where we step in. Through transformative programs, The Literacy Lab works with talented future educators to provide critical, evidence-based literacy instruction to the students who need it most. In doing so, we support students’ learning and development and build up the next generation of educators and leaders. Together, with partners like you, we are working to ensure every child has the chance to read, learn, and thrive.

Our Core Values

Over the years of serving our communities, we have established the following guiding principles.

Intentional Action, Meaningful Impact

Our impact is strongest when we approach our work with intention, responsibility, and a deep commitment to the students, schools, and communities we serve. We strive to create meaningful change through practices that reflect our values.

People First

People are not just part of our organization; people are our organization—we must focus on their humanity. This drives us to best serve, support, and prioritize our students, staff, Fellows, and families, understanding and attending to their needs, hopes, and dreams as people.

Both/And Mindset

To honor our internal and external commitments, we must employ a both/and mindset. This drives us to reject either/or thinking and decision-making and lean into creative both/and thinking and execution. We will be disciplined and adaptive, systematic and creative, collaborative and decisive.

Lifelong Learning

We must center and prioritize our learning and development as individuals and as a collective. This drives us to use data, research, and feedback to assess and revise our practices continuously. We will be bold and humble as we learn from and with students, school partners, Fellows, and one another.

Intentional Resource Stewardship

We must be fully and broadly sustainable to achieve our desired impact for those we serve. This drives us to create and maintain sustainable, engaging roles for staff, Fellows, and to be diligent and thoughtful in how we generate and allocate our financial and other resources.
