If selected, you will be placed as a Pre-K or K-3 tutor in one of four metropolitan areas. We can't guarantee every tutor their top choices, but we make an effort to accommodate location preferences. Please indicate your top choices below. If you are interested in more than one program or location, you can select multiple options.
Program Preference
Please take a moment to learn about our two programs:

PRE-K TUTORS
  • Embedded full-time in one Pre-K classroom with a lead teacher and an assistant teacher
  • Deliver daily whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one interventions
K-3 TUTORS
  • Embedded full-time in a school, supporting students across Kindergarten to 3rd grade
  • Deliver one-on-one interventions to 15-18 students, 20 minutes/day, 5 days/week

Location Preference
Next school year, we plan to place a team of over 200 full-time tutors across four metropolitan areas: Baltimore, MD, Kansas City, MO, Richmond, VA, and Washington, DC. You can learn more about the unique local contexts of these cities on our website: http://theliteracylab.org/our-work/where-we-work/

You may enter up to four metropolitan areas in which you would consider serving. If you are flexible on location preference, please select "flexible."

We care about the students we serve, and we want to make sure they get the most out of tutoring. We know our tutors are critical to our students' success. That's why we provide year-round training, coaching, and support to help our tutors effectively implement our evidenced-based interventions.
Commitment to Service
To successfully serve our students, tutors must commit to the program for a full academic year. Please indicate your commitment below:

We cannot replace tutors once the school year has begun. Committing to our program means serving for the entire 11 months.

You will meet with your students Monday - Friday during school hours.

A full-time AmeriCorps service term is 1700 hours. You will need to serve 40-45 hours per week to meet this requirement before the end of the year. This will include service outside of the school day and/or site.

Please carefully consider any available supports that may help you fulfill a service-year commitment.

To ensure the protection of the students we serve, AmeriCorps requires an extensive criminal history check. This includes the National Sex Offender Registry, FBI, and various state checks. By AmeriCorps rules, you cannot work without accompaniment with children, individuals with disabilities, or individuals over 60 years of age, until the criminal history check is complete and you are cleared.

If you have a criminal conviction or criminal adjudication, it does not necessarily disqualify you from consideration, depending on circumstances. However, intentional misrepresentation or omission of criminal history is grounds for disqualification.
