Meet the Team: Thomas Oakley

The Literacy Lab is excited to announce our newest staff member! Thomas Oakley recently joined the Literacy Lab team as Program Manager in Springfield. In his role, Thomas will lead our inaugural cohort of tutors in the region and begin building a strong foundation for years of continued work and growth in Springfield.

Thomas shared a few thoughts about joining the Literacy Lab team and his motivation to return to serve his home community of Springfield, MA!

What influenced you to apply for your position at The Literacy Lab?

I want to continue to make an impact in the lives of inner-city children. I’m from Springfield so this mission is personal; I believe I have a responsibility to make a positive change. I’ve seen the importance literacy has on life outcomes, and I believe it is an essential skill that has a life-altering effect. If we lay a proper foundation, it will last our kids a lifetime.

What is one of your personal core values?

My life motto is “Leave people, places, and things better than you found them.” That’s what I always strive to do.

What are you most excited for about starting your position at The Literacy Lab?

I am excited to meet all of the members that compose our Massachusetts team. I’m a huge advocate for building community and a supportive environment for our team members. I’m excited to learn, collaborate, and bring this work to life. I believe that if our members have the resources they need and if they feel supported and appreciated, ultimately that will ensure our students are successful.

What’s your favorite children’s book?

How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. We would read the book and watch the cartoon movie every year when I was younger.

We’re excited to welcome and introduce Thomas to the Literacy Lab community! As our team in Springfield continues to develop, we look forward to learning from Thomas and seeing the program grow. If you’re interested in joining the team as a Literacy Lab tutor in Springfield, apply today!
