Impact Awards: Celebrating the Literacy Lab in Kansas City

Last night, our team in Kansas City celebrated another school year of building strong readers and making an impact! If you missed the festivities at KC’s 2018 Impact Awards, we’ll fill you in on the work that Literacy Lab tutors have been doing in Missouri this year.

By The Numbers

Even with a month left to go in the service term, Literacy Lab tutors in Kansas City have served more than 68,000 hours in the 2017-18 school year. That’s the equivalent of seven years! In that time, tutors have served more than 1,100 students at 23 schools. While Literacy Lab tutors spent most of their time in direct service to students, they also volunteered with more than a dozen nonprofit organizations in KC!

On average, 70% of students enrolled in our K-3 program exceeded their growth targets. 87% of Pre-K students are on-target for Kindergarten readiness. It’s been a phenomenal year for growth for Kansas City students! This kind of impact would not be possible without our dedicated team of tutors, coaches, and school partners. We’re grateful to be part of this community of changemakers!

What’s Next?

We’re excited that close to a third of this year’s cohort of tutors in Kansas City will be returning for an additional year of service next year! Additionally, another third of this year’s tutors will go on to teacher prep and certification programs, including Teach For America and the Kansas City Teacher Residency. While our tutors are gearing up for a great next chapter, so are we! We’re busy recruiting and preparing for the 2018-19 school year. Next year we’ll be working with new partners, programs, and people in Kansas City.

Celebrating at the Impact Awards

At the end of every school year, we take a little time to acknowledge and celebrate our tutors. Last night we were joined by school and community partners, including our friends at City Year Kansas City, Kansas City Public SchoolsBrookside Charter, and Scuola Vita Nuova.  Literacy Lab students drew thank you notes for their tutors that decorated every surface of the event space.

This year’s K-3 KC Impact Awards winners were tutors Jessica Eacret, Kate Crotty, Ethan Atwell, Lauren Crusoe, Mitchell King, Thalia Fenton, Nylah Evans-Watson, and Hope Austin. We also celebrated accomplishments by Pre-K tutors Reno Kersey, Marium Zahir, Michaela Ousnamer, Mattie Davis, Ashley Ponce-Cardenas, and Audrey Saunders. Every tutor on our team is striving to build strong readers day in and day out. We’re incredibly proud, and honored to watch them graduate to Literacy Lab alums!
