The Literacy Lab is committed to recruiting a diverse pool of tutors who reflect the communities we serve. Demographic data is processed separately from selection to prevent bias. However, if you would prefer not to disclose this information, you may select “Prefer not to disclose.”

Prior AmeriCorps experience is not required or necessary to be a successful tutor. We ask about prior AmeriCorps experience because it can affect your eligibility to serve with us and receive an education award.

First, please indicate how much schooling you expect to complete by January 2022. If you are currently in school, but planning to graduate by January 2022, you can indicate that you have already graduated.

Successful Literacy Lab tutors come from a variety of backgrounds. Although formal experience with children and/or youth may be helpful for our tutors, it is not required.


Please include any professional and/or extended volunteer experiences that have contributed to your skill set, including:

• Full- or part-time paid jobs
• Full- or part-time volunteer roles
• Leadership positions in clubs or other organizations
• AmeriCorps or other service year positions
• Self-employment
• Internships or fellowships
• Parenting or other family support

Beginning with your most recent position, you may include up to three positions you believe are relevant to The Literacy Lab program.

To protect the students we serve, AmeriCorps requires extensive criminal history checks. These include the National Sex Offender Registry, FBI, and various state and local checks. 

If you have a previous criminal conviction or criminal adjudication, it does not necessarily disqualify you from consideration. However, intentional misrepresentation or omission of criminal history is grounds for disqualification.

The Literacy Lab strives to recruit, select, and support the most capable and dedicated tutors for our students. To this end, application and reference data for hired tutors is used in research that helps inform selection and outreach. Names and/or specific identifiers are excluded in this research whenever possible.
